In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization, is one of the most popular assisted reproductive therapies. The procedure involves the fertilization of the egg outside of the body, and is done in five separate stages. The first step requires the use of fertility drugs, typically in the form of injections, to stimulate the production of eggs. Next, the fertility doctor retrieves the eggs using a small needle that penetrates the ovaries and suctions the eggs out of each follicle. During the third step of IVF, the highest quality eggs and sperm are inseminated and fertilized. Over the next three to five days, the eggs should divide and become a healthy, growing embryo. At this time, the final step of the IVF procedure is performed; one or several embryos are implanted in the womb.

The treatment last six to eight weeks.  Of 100 couples trying to conceive naturally about 84 will get pregnant within a year, and about 92 within two years.

Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination is one of the first fertility treatments that couples try when they are having trouble conceiving. The treatment process usually starts at the beginning of the female's menstrual cycle, at which time she starts taking fertility drugs to increase the number of eggs that are available for fertilization. When the women starts to ovulate, the male must produce a sperm sample; the sperm are then washed and concentrated to limit cramping and increase chances of conception. The fertility specialist then places the prepared sperm in a catheter that places the sperm into the vagina, cervix, or uterus. Cramping and increase chances of conception. The fertility specialist then places the prepared sperm in a catheter that places the sperm into the vagina, cervix, or uterus.

The treatment last one to two weeks.

There is a 10-20 percent success rate. (younger patients using fertility drugs have higher success rates)

Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection

Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg in order to fertilise it. The fertilised egg (embryo) is then transferred to the woman’s womb.  The major development of ICSI means that as long as some sperm can be obtained (even in very low numbers), fertilisation is possible.

During ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the white (cytoplasm) of a mature egg using an ultra-fine glass needle (pipette). The fertilised egg is then observed until it has undergone a certain number of divisions before being transferred into the woman's reproductive tract.

The procedure for ICSI is similar to that for IVF, but instead of fertilisation taking place in a dish, the embryologist selects sperm from the sample and a single sperm is injected directly into each egg.
